Tree Outside My Study Window

Ellen Grace Olinger – 2015

For years and years, I have been watching the same birch tree outside my study window.  This is a small room, with a comfortable chair for reading, and a desk.

I also like to take pictures of hosta plants by the tree.

Late summer, I see a leaf or two turn gold.  The days are a little shorter, and summers are indeed short here.

Then the tree is full of gold leaves.  I know when they fall, that new leaves will grow again in spring – as they are now.

leaf buds
and raindrops
on the birch tree
new dreams
from tears

tree branches
and leaves
in predawn breeze
sorrows begin to soften
and heal

reminding me
to love each day
one gold leaf

a few leaves
drift from the
birch tree
and reach the
last of the lilies
