December colors

Yesterday I wrote: *

once I thought
the colors of December
were red and green –
wildflowers from
another time in snow

We have long late Springs here by Lake Michigan in our area of Wisconsin.  I have steadily let the gardens grow wild.  First because I wasn’t able to do more, and then loving them wild.  The fallen leaves nourish new perennials in Spring, when we can still have snow and cold in April.  The goldenrod catches the snow in winter.

The beautiful painting by Eric Sloane is from Eric Sloane’s America: Paintings In Oil (courtesy of Dover Publications).
